The buttons in the first three columns generate patterns but others affect
the way the patterns are drawn. Some buttons are for manipulating or
distorting an image that has already been created.

BOXES (row 1, column 1)
Left-click with the mouse to start the pattern. It will continue
indefinitely until you press <SPACE> or the right mouse button. If you let
it continue it will become more random after a while.
* The asterisk means that this pattern is affected by the settings in the
LINE/MODE menu. To access this menu, click the button at row 1, column 4.
These settings only work if you right-click to start the pattern.
# The hash means that this pattern is affected by the AUTO EXIT button
(row 6, column 6). When the pattern is stopped it does so on a dark colour
if this function is enabled. (default = enabled)
STAR PATTERNS (row 2, column 1)
Left-click with the mouse to start the pattern. It will continue
indefinitely until you press <SPACE> or the right mouse button. If you
left-click as drawing proceeds, the style of pattern will change. The
number of audible 'tweet' sounds indicates the current style.
You may also access a menu to select the style before drawing starts by
pressing <SPACE> when the mouse pointer is over the button. Also available
in this menu is the RE-START from LAST EXIT option. If enabled, patterns
will not start from the edge of the screen, but from the previous exit
points. This function is automatically disabled if no star pattern has yet
been drawn, or if the previous star pattern used a clip area. (see CLIP
AREA - row 2, column 4)
* The asterisk means that this pattern is affected by the settings in the
LINE/MODE menu. To access this menu, click the button at row 1, column 4.
These settings only work if you right-click to start the pattern.
# The hash means that this pattern is affected by the AUTO EXIT button
(row 6, column 6). When the pattern is stopped it does so on a dark colour
if this function is enabled. (default = enabled)
MOIRE (row 3, column 1)
Left-click with the mouse to start the pattern. It will continue until it
reaches the centre, or you may stop it with <SPACE> or the right mouse
button.

# The hash means that this pattern is affected by the AUTO EXIT button
(row 6, column 6). When the pattern is stopped it does so on a dark colour
if this function is enabled. (default = enabled)
LINE / MODE (row 1, column 4)
Click this button for a menu to select line types (dotted / dashed) and
graphics modes (replace / transparent / reverse transparent / XOR). These
selections only operate when you right-click on buttons marked with an
asterisk *.
CLIP AREA (row 2, column 4)
Left-click to use the whole screen for drawing patterns. Right-click to
define the clip area. You will be presented with cross-hair cursors.
Left-click once to define the top left, click again to define the
baseline. There is no need to hold the mouse button down to drag the box.
To define an asymmetrical area, make your first click a right-click then
click again to define the bottom right corner.
The mouse pointer will change to indicate that clip mode is active. Some
patterns will just be clipped. Those which use the clip area parameters
include: Box, Star, Moire, Rays, Diamond. Also Dithered Dots (right-click
only).
To clear the clip area only, right-click on CLEAR SCREEN (CLS).
HELP (row 5, column 4)
Click to access some of the information provided here and also to find
out which keys are active:
During Drawing: <SPACE> = Stop drawing, go to VIEW mode.
<-> (minus on Numeric Keypad) = Slow down.
<+> (plus " " " ) = Speed up.
In VIEW mode <C> = Cycle the colours / Stop cycling.
<SPACE> = Return to Main Menu.
Right Arrow = Change Palette.
Left Arrow = " "
<Undo> = Undo the last pattern.
In CHANGE PALETTE <Insert> = Copy palette to User-defined.
MIRROR (row 2, column 5)
Click the button for the menu. Here you may restore symmetry by copying
quarters or halves of the screen. Twenty variations are possible. Once
started, the process cannot be interrupted but you can undo it afterwards.
VIEW (row 5, column 5)
Click here to view the current work screen. (See HELP above.)
FAST / SLOW (row 6, column 5)
Click with either button to toggle slow/fast. The mouse pointer changes
to indicate if SLOW mode is active. Slow mode affects not only pattern-
drawing but MERGE PREVIOUS too. Finer control can be achieved in slow
mode. Remember that you can toggle it on/off with <-> and <+> on the
numeric keypad too.
ZOOM / DISTORT (row 2, column 6)
Click here for a menu for various ways of distorting the work screen. You
may zoom a selected area to fill the screen, reduce the screen to quarter
or sixteenth size (fills the screen with smaller copies) or scroll the
screen in various ways. SLOW mode can be used if scrolling.
CLEAR SCREEN (CLS) (row 5, column 6)
Left-click to clear the whole screen. Right-click to clear only the clip
area.
AUTO EXIT (row 6, column 6)
This is an aid to tidier patterns and is enabled by default. Click with
either button to toggle it on/off. When enabled it ensures that
appropriate patterns (indicated with a hash #) only exit on a dark colour,
regardless of whether slow or fast mode is operative.
UNDO (row 5, column 7)
Yes, you've guessed it; this undoes the last pattern drawn - or any zoom
or distort effects. The backup screen is copied back to the work screen.
You can also press the <Undo> key in VIEW mode.
DATE / TIME (row 6, column 7)
You really ought to set the date and time whenever you use programs which
save anything to disk. You can set both by clicking this button. The
system date and time is also shown when you click on the SYSTEM button.
MERGE PREVIOUS (row 2, column 8)
Merges the current work screen with the previous (backup) one in a
variety of ways. Left-click to use the current merge mode (set to
'bitplane' when Kozmic 4 loads). Right-click for a menu to select other
merge modes. Before you return to View mode you are offered the choice of
different palettes. To return to the current palette, click on the
highlighted palette number.
If you merge two loaded screens the last one loaded will define the
Loaded Palette. You could change back to the first palette if you copied
it to the User-defined Palette before loading the second screen. (See
CHANGE PALETTE - row 3, column 9)
Merge modes other than APPEAR ** support SLOW mode; try pressing <-> or
<+> on the numeric keypad as merging takes place. Also try <SPACE> to
interrupt merging and grab the screen partly-merged.
SWEEP MODE (row 3, column 8)
As the patterns are drawn the colour is swept up/down the current palette.
The default mode is 'up-down'. Just plain 'up' or 'down' are best for
colour cycling to give an illusion of movement. Click here for a quick
menu to change the modes. Right-click to exit the menu.
COLOUR RANGE (row 4, column 8)
Left-click to set the defaults: Use colours 1 to 15 (F in hexadecimal)
Sweep 'up-down'
Right-click for a menu to select the Sweep Mode (as in the previous
button above), select the start colour (Colmin) and end colour (Colmax).
(You may want to restrict the range of colours used for a background
pattern, for example.)
** NOTE ** Whenever you cycle the colours by:
(a) pressing <C> in View mode
(b) clicking the button (row 4, column 9)
- only the colours from Colmin to the end (15 / $F) are cycled.
You may also change palettes from this menu by pressing the left / right
arrow keys. Help is available within the menu.
SAVE (row 5, column 8)
The screen can be saved in either Degas (*.PI1) format or Neochrome
(*.NEO) format. After you choose the format a file selector will appear.
You must type in the name of your picture including the correct extension
or suffix, eg MYPIC.NEO or MYPIC.PI1 and press <Return> or click on
Return.
You will also be offered the option of saving a tiny *.INF file eg
MYPIC.INF for later use in Kozmic's slide show. This can enable cycling
colours, cycling palettes and duration of individual pictures within the
slide show.
MERGE PRESET (row 2, column 9)
Click with either button to access menus. Here, you may merge the current
screen with many predefined patterns. There are three types: Icon
patterns, system-fill patterns and whole-screen patterns. All three use
the bitplane method of merging.
Before you return to View mode you are offered the choice of different
palettes. To return to the current palette, click on the highlighted
palette number.
CHANGE PALETTE (row 3, column 9)
The current picture is shown in the right half of the screen. Move the
mouse pointer over the numbers to see what the picture looks like in
other palettes. Click to invoke that palette or click on the highlighted
palette number (current palette) if you don't want to change it.
To copy a palette to the User-defined palette, press <Insert>.
CYCLE COLOURS (row 4, column 9)
Left-click to start the colours cycling and go to View mode. Right-click
to select the cycling speed 1 (fast) to 9 (slow). Left-click to choose and
right-click to exit.
LOAD SCREEN (row 5, column 9)
You may load any *.NEO or *.PI1 screen into the workscreen by clicking on
this button. Any current image in the workscreen will be replaced but the
previous image is stored as a backup for UNDO or MERGE.
Kozmic looks to see if an *.INF file with the same name is present on the
disk. If it finds one it displays its settings for Colour Cycling,
Palette Cycling and duration (display-time). This information is for the
Slide Show.
The palette from the loaded screen is stored as Palette 29 and can be
easily restored if you switch palettes then change your mind. (See CHANGE
PALETTE - row 3, column 9.)
COLOUR RANGE (row 4, column 8) may be affected by an *.INF file found
when a picture is loaded. Left-click on this button if you want to restore
the default colour range.
SYSTEM (row 6, column 9)
Displays: Free Memory (RAM), Free Space on current disk or HD partition,
System date & time. A menu allows you to view a directory (folder
contents) or delete a file.
50Hz/60Hz (row 1, column 10)
Left-click for 50Hz or right-click for 60Hz. This sets the speed at which
the screen is updated. In Europe 50Hz is normal and setting 60Hz will
increase the height of the screen image excessively. It may also cause
failure of the Vertical Hold on older TV sets. (You really ought to use a
colour monitor or at least a TV with a SCART socket for a sharp image.)
CYCLE PALETTES (row 3, column 10)
Left-click for normal speed; right-click for fast speed. The current
drawing screen is shown in all 30 palettes and their numbers are shown.
This continues until <SPACE> or the right mouse button is pressed.
Pressing left/right arrow keys also changes the palette when in View mode.
ADJUST COLOUR (row 4, column 10)
Use this to edit the User-defined Palette. When Kozmic starts, neither
this palette (palette 30) nor the 'Loaded Screen' palette (palette 29) is
set up. To copy a palette for editing, first click on CHANGE PALETTE (row
3, column 9) then press the <Insert> key when the mouse pointer is over
the palette number you want to copy.
Click on a colour at the top of the screen then click on the up/down
arrows to change that colour. The work-screen is displayed so you can see
the effect of your alterations.
SLIDE SHOW (row 5, column 10)
Clicking on this button causes a menu to appear. The current directory
(drive and folder) is searched to see if pictures are there. When Kozmic
starts it defaults to *.NEO format pictures but you can change this to
*.PI1 in the PICTURES menu. Help is available for all options in this
menu.
EXIT (row 6, column 10)
Click here to quit Kozmic and return to the desktop.
